I Trust When Dark My Road: A Lutheran View of Depression by Todd Peperkorn

Free copies (both electronic and physical) of I Trust When Dark My Road by Todd Peperkorn are available by clicking here. It's a quick read and very helpful. The book is written by a Lutheran pastor who suffers from depression and written especially to pastors but provides a good introduction to depression in general. Rev. Todd Peperkorn is very open and honest about his own journey and provides a way of dealing with depression through the lens of the theology of the cross. He provides helpful advice and various options. He regards depression as a real illness and offers advice both to the depressed and those who are close to the depressed person. Our knee jerk reaction as Americans is to tell the depressed person to snap out of it and pull himself up by his boot straps but this is not what Christ has called us to do. Those who believe that "real" Christians do not suffer depression do not understand Christianity, do not know the cross, and have a false understanding of Christ.
